The SPHERE project, “Synthesizing Plastics: Helmholtz Expertise on Plastics Research and Policy Engagement,” aims to address global plastic pollution by consolidating knowledge on the end-of-life management of plastics. It brings together expertise from the Helmholtz Association in Germany to support sustainable plastic degradation and recycling policies. SPHERE focuses on integrating research from various projects, such as the Microplastics Competence Cluster and FINEST,  to enhance strategies for circularity and environmental sustainability. The project engages stakeholders from policy, society, industry, and academia to bridge knowledge gaps and inform decision-making. It will produce a synthesis report and policy brief to guide sustainable practices and promote circularity in plastic management. SPHERE officially launched with a kick-off meeting in Berlin in January 2025, bringing together experts to define the project’s focus and engage with relevant stakeholders.
