The Microplastics Competence Cluster (MPCC) was established at UFZ as a virtual network of interdisciplinary scientists focused on the environmental impacts of microplastics (MPs) and associated chemicals. Launched during the 2023 General Assembly of the Changing Earth – Sustaining our Future research program, the MPCC has expanded to include expertise from other Helmholtz Centres. Its purpose is to enhance understanding of how MPs affect humans and ecosystems by integrating diverse research disciplines. The cluster promotes collaboration within and outside UFZ, fosters visibility and outreach, and connects researchers with external partners, like Helmholtz Centre Hereon. It also facilitates joint publications, new research initiatives, and the development of solutions to address plastic pollution.
